No Indian company was willing to release it at that time. After that concert I recorded an album at my own expense of Khan Sahib’s Ghazals in LA. Last year I toured the US with concerts whose theme was A Tribute To Mehdi Hassan. There won’t be another Mehdi Hassan nor a Jagjit Singh. Aapka jo kaam hai who hemesha zinda rahega….An era had now ended. I told him, ‘Khan Saab I can’t even begin to imagine what suffering you’re going through. In these years, the maestro has had a great journey with multiple gazals and Bollywood songs. The 57-year-old singer, who has sung songs like ‘Zindagi jab bhi teri bazm mein’,’Phir chhidi raat baat Phoolon ki’ and ‘Na Kisi Ki Aankh Ka’ among others, would be hosting the show.

When in Pakistan Khan Sahib heard that roar of approval in Mumbai he broke down. Last year, renowned ghazal singer Talat Aziz celebrated four decades of his career. Ghazal singer Talat Aziz is all set to host a radio show where he would be sharing memorable experiences of his life apart from playing some melodies. I requested Khan Sahib to come on line and then I asked my audience to loudly greet him. I impulsively took out my cellphone and called up Mehdi Saab’s son Arif. There was a lot of demand for Mehdi Hassan numbers. He was a great classical artiste and he was respected by the greatest classical vocalists like Amir Khan Sahib, Vilayat Khan Sahib, Salamat Ali Khan Sahib…Once I was singing in a mehfil in Mumbai a couple of years back. "There will never be another Mehdi Hassan. He was a very giving, very generous artiste." Khan Sahib patiently tried to explain where she was going wrong. I remember that same evening a female singer whom I won’t name, just couldn’t get the rendition right. It was a memorable evening.Even at that time when he was ill there was so much to learn from him. And then Khan Sahib got into the mood and joined me. I remember the first song I sang was Khan Sahib’sĭil-e-nadaan tujhe hua kya hai. There were lots of Khan Sahib’s fans there. After the concert he came to dinner to a friend’s house. He requested me to sing some of his songs. But the soul in ghazals will remain forever. The music world has changed in many ways. He made it a point to be there in his wheelchair. Ghazal maestro Talat Aziz says a lot has changed in the music world, but the soul of ghazals remains intact. I called him to Mumbai to attend my concert.

The last time he sang in India was in the year 2000 when he had come for treatment in Kerala. He asked me play some of my recordings with him. He couldn’t sit up properly and had to be propped up with pillows. He’d then make me sit with him with his harmonium….I met him in Pakistan in 2005. Every morning he would have his cup of tea in his It was that time between concerts when I got to observe him. We did 24-25 concerts during the weekends. I got to observe this great man from such close quarters. He was a strict teacher and he taught me so much…I’ve so many memories…In 1986 I went on a US concert tour with Mehdi Saab. He cared and continued to care for me and nurtured my voice. To stay up to date with Talat’s latest events, follow him on Facebook."Mehdi Saab could’ve easily made polite noises about my singing and moved on. Subsequently in 1981 Khayyam Saheb the legendary music director introduced Talat Aziz in the classic film ] with the famous ghazal’ Zindagi Jab bhi’ and followed it by Bazaar, with the immortal ghazal ‘ Phir Chidi Raat’ which he sang along with the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. This was a runaway hit and the ghazals from this album like ‘Kaise Sukoon Paoon’, ‘Chahenge Tujhe par…” to name a few. Jagjit Singh composed this album titled ‘Jagjit Singh presents Talat Aziz’. Talat Aziz released his first album in Feb 1980, under the baton of Jagjit Singh. That blessing is what Talat treasures most and that is what he is trying to impart on the younger generation who would like to learn the this gayaki. Talat Aziz greatly values the tutelage and the blessings he received from his Guru Mehdi Hasan and remembers that once Mehdi Saheb remarked “ One day the fragrance of my gayaki will reflect in your singing”. It proved to be fateful as exactly a week later Mehdi Hasan Saheb suffered his paralytic stroke after which he could never sing again. But the last time the Guru and his Shishya sang together was in Oct 2000 in Mumbai. Mehdi Saheb and Talat Aziz were together for almost over 25 years on and off and they even did a North American concert tour together in 1986. He was trained primarily by Ustad Samad Khan and later by Ustad Faiyyaz Ahmed Khan from the Kirana Gharana.Īfter the initial training, Talat Aziz learnt music from the Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan. Talat Aziz took his initial training in music from Kirana Gharana. This greatly influenced him and he started learning music from an early age. His family loved fine arts and used to organise Mehfils in their house, inviting artists and poets like Jagjit Singh and Jaan Nisaar Akhtar to name a few.
